A young housing stock with ageing glass
The 1980s and 90s streets were built with double-pane sealed units throughout, and those units are now old enough to fog. Fewer LaSalle homes need major repairs than homes in Windsor, so the frame around a fogged unit is usually worth keeping.
That's the honest middle ground: a tired pane doesn't mean a tired house. Usually the glass changes and the window stays; now and then the whole window has had it, and the pro should say why. Down the river in Amherstburg, houses run older and the work shifts toward wood sash.
Fogged sealed units: make sure it's the seal
Muggy summer mornings fog plenty of LaSalle windows on the outside. That's dew, and it wipes away. A blown seal leaves the haze between the panes, where no cloth reaches. The glass itself is a sealed unit, or thermal glass.
In a newer home, look for paperwork before paying. A maker's warranty on the unit, or a builder's warranty on the house, may still apply; the spacer bar between the panes often carries a name or date.

Patio doors, screens and hardware in newer homes
Newer windows and doors fail in small ways first, and none of these means a new window:
- Sliding patio doors: grinding, sticking or a lock that won't engage usually means rollers, a track cleaning or a new lock.
- Screens: a rip, a kinked frame, or one that won't stay in its track.
- Cranks: a casement crank that spins without moving the window has a stripped operator, and it swaps out.
- Balances: a hung sash that won't stay up needs a new balance.
Storm damage: the order that helps
The tornado of 24 August 2016 came inland at LaSalle's Islandview Marina before moving on into Windsor, and people here remember it. Most storm damage is smaller: a gust, a branch, a patio umbrella through a door panel. The order doesn't change. Keep clear of the glass, photograph it before cleanup, then have the opening closed up; a pro can make it safe and weathertight while the permanent glass is made.
Permits come from the Town of LaSalle
LaSalle issues its own building permits, so the City of Windsor's rules don't apply. Ask the Town of LaSalle's building department how it treats a window replaced in the same opening.
Turning a window into a patio door is another matter. It means cutting the wall below the opening and often changing the header above, which is structural work, so expect a permit. Get the Town's answer before anyone cuts, and ask whether the pro's quote includes it.

Why is the glass fogging between the panes in my LaSalle house?
The edge seal on that sealed unit has failed. Double-pane glass is sealed at the edge to keep dry air or gas in the gap. After years of heating and cooling, with summer sun adding strain, the seal can give way and moist air gets in. It condenses where no cloth reaches. With so many LaSalle homes from the 1980s and 90s, it's a common sight.
Can a fogged unit in a newer LaSalle home be cleaned out instead of replaced?
Sometimes. A defogging service drills into the glass, washes out and dries the gap, and caps the holes. The view often clears, but the original edge seal stays broken, so results vary. Swapping in a new unit, frame untouched, is the usual repair. Check first for a builder's or maker's warranty, which may cover it.
Does the Town of LaSalle need a permit to turn a window into a patio door?
Expect so, and ask before anyone cuts. A window-to-door conversion removes wall below the opening and often changes the header, which is structural work. LaSalle issues its own permits, separately from the City of Windsor, so the Town's building department is the one to ask. Ask about a same-size window swap too; that answer is usually simpler.
Will home insurance pay for a window a LaSalle storm broke?
That's between you and your policy, and the deductible decides a lot, so talk to the insurer before you sign for permanent work. What helps either way: photos of the damage inside and out, taken before cleanup; a note of the date and what happened; and a written, itemized quote. Keep the receipt for any board-up as well.
