Before anything else
Make it safe first
Keep kids and pets out, and wear shoes and gloves. If the pane is cracked but in place, tape both sides. If it's open, photograph the damage, pick up the loose glass and tack plywood or heavy poly over the opening from inside. Our page on covering a broken window has the full steps.
Can new glass go in on the first visit? Sometimes. Plain glass for an old sash can often be cut on the spot. A sealed unit, tempered glass or anything patterned has to be ordered, so the opening gets a temporary cover and the glass comes later. Ask which it is when the glazier calls.

Single pane
Common in older wood windows and storms. The broken glass and old putty or stops come out, and a new pane is cut and set. The sash stays.
Double pane (sealed unit)
The panes are sealed together as one unit, so a crack in either means a new unit, built to fit the existing frame. It cures any fog too.
Tempered or laminated
Door, sidelight and shower glass is safety glass that can't be cut once made. It's ordered to exact size, so these jobs take a second trip.
Older homes

Windsor's heritage register is concentrated in the core, Walkerville and Sandwich, with more listings in the older parts of Riverside. When a pane breaks in one of those sashes, the fix is reglazing.
The glazier removes the old putty and glazier points, lifts out the broken glass, and cleans and primes the rabbet. New glass is bedded, pinned with fresh points and finished with a bevel of glazing compound, painted once it cures. Surviving old panes can often be saved, so the wavy look stays.

Where safety glass is required
Safety glass is tempered or laminated, so it breaks without long, sharp shards. Ontario's building code requires it in sliding doors and storm doors, in sidelights so wide they could pass for a door, and in shower and bathtub enclosures.
