Fixing screen doors that tear, sag or jump the track

A screen door here does a season's worth of work: open, shut, open again from spring to the first frost, with the dog leaning on the mesh. The two that wear out are the sliding screen on the patio door and the hinged screen or storm door at the front or side, and both are mostly fixed with parts and new mesh. We connect you with a local pro who repairs screen doors, even just the one. This page covers the doors you already have; for a screen that rolls away, see retractable screens.

  • Sliding, hinged and storm doors
  • Rollers, closers and new mesh
  • One door is a real job

A tired closer and a loose hinge side let a storm door hang like this. Both are fixable.

Patio screens

Sliding patio screens: rollers, frames and mesh

The sliding screen is light, which is its weakness: it bends easily and rides on small rollers.

Keeps falling off the track

Rollers set at the wrong height or one broken. They're reset or replaced, and a bent track lip is straightened.

Drags or won't roll

Worn rollers or a gritty track. A clean and new rollers usually get it gliding.

Bent or racked frame

A twisted frame won't sit in both tracks. Mild bends straighten; bad ones are rebuilt to size.

Torn mesh

Rescreened in the old frame, and the handle and latch can be swapped at the same time.

Hinged doors

Hinged screen and storm doors: closers, latches and sagging

A hinged screen or storm door hangs on a light frame, and the closer does the heavy lifting. A worn closer lets the door slam or drift open; a loose hinge side lets it sag and scrape. New closers, a reset hinge rail and a new latch cure most of it.

Many storm doors carry a screen insert that swaps with a glass panel, or a glass panel that slides down to open a screen. Stuck panels and torn inserts are repairs too, and broken storm door glass is covered under door glass.

Windsor gets a fair number of gusty days, and summer thunderstorms bring sudden gusts of their own. One good gust can fling a storm door open and bend the closer. A wind chain stops it at a safe angle.

Pets

Pet doors and pet-resistant mesh

Pet-resistant mesh

Heavier coated mesh that shrugs off claws and noses, worth it on any screen door a dog greets visitors at.

Pet doors in the screen

A small flap set into the mesh of a hinged or sliding screen lets pets come and go without opening the door.

Push bars and grilles

A bar or grille across the lower half keeps paws and small hands from pushing through.

Fix or replace

Repair the screen door or replace it?

Repair while the frame is straight and square: rollers, a closer, a latch or fresh mesh are small jobs. Replace when the frame is kinked, corroded through or badly racked, or never fit the opening. If the patio door behind the screen needs work too, sliding door repair can happen on the same visit, and torn window screens can ride along under window screen repair.

What affects the quote

What moves a screen door quote

Screen doors are small jobs with a lot of variety. The price moves with:

  • Sliding screen, or hinged screen or storm door
  • Parts: rollers, closer, latch, handle or hinges
  • Rescreening, and the mesh chosen
  • Straightening a frame versus building a new one
  • Odd sizes and custom frames
  • Adding a pet door, push bar or wind chain

A full-length photo of the door and one up close on the rollers or hinges often tells the pro what's needed.

Not standard

Odd sizes and older openings

Sliding screens and storm doors come in common sizes, but plenty of openings don't match, especially on older houses and reframed doorways. A screen door can be built to measure, or a stock door fitted with an expander strip to close a small gap. Measure the opening in three places each way, since older openings are rarely square, and send the smallest numbers. For glass, screens and hardware on other doors, start at doors and screens.
