Glass walls · Windsor-Essex

Glass partitions and interior glass doors for offices and homes

Glass walls split an office into rooms without losing the daylight, which matters in a deep, narrow main-street building where the only windows face the street. We connect Windsor-Essex offices, clinics and homeowners with independent local pros who fit partitions and interior glass doors. Send a floor plan or photos. Sometimes one glass door in an existing wall, or film on glass you already have, does the job.

Office layouts

Office fronts and meeting-room walls

Most office glass is one of three types. The pro suggests one after seeing the floor and ceiling it has to meet.

Framed partitions

Glass in slim aluminium frames, often black. Sturdy, easy to add a door to, and forgiving of a floor that isn’t level.

Frameless glass walls

Panels joined with clear seams and slim channels. The cleanest look, but it needs a level floor and a solid ceiling.

Half wall, glass above

A solid lower wall with glass on top hides desks and cables, and is often the simplest way to open up an existing wall.

Sound and privacy

Sound, privacy film and frosting

Single glass stops some sound, not all. A room for confidential calls usually needs thicker or laminated glass, sometimes a double-glazed wall, and seals around the door. Tell the pro plainly what the room is for.

For privacy, frosted film or etched glass can cover a whole panel or a band at eye level. Film can go on later and come off if the room changes use; see window film.

Glass doors

Interior glass doors: swing, sliding and barn-style

Swing doors suit a meeting room that’s in and out all day. Sliding doors run on an overhead track and save space in a narrow hallway. Barn-style doors hang on an exposed rail; they look good but seal less well, because the door sits in front of the opening.

Glass in any door has to be safety glass. If an existing one drags or won’t latch, see glass door repair.

At home

Home room dividers and glass walls

The same glass works at home, and small jobs are welcome: one barn door, one panel.

A home office

A glass wall or door closes off a desk in a basement or spare room without making it feel shut in.

A room divider

Fixed glass between kitchen and dining keeps the light. Beside a stair it's a guard; see glass railings.

A pantry or laundry door

Frosted glass on a barn-style or sliding door. For shelves and mirrors, see glass and mirrors.

Before work starts

Working in occupied offices and older buildings

Most partitions go in while the office keeps running; the glass is made to size off-site, so on site it's mostly fitting.

Older downtown and main-street buildings add checks: uneven floors, plaster ceilings, and sometimes heritage status. The City keeps a heritage register, with many entries downtown and in Walkerville and Sandwich. The proposed Walkerville heritage district would cover exterior changes, not interiors, according to the City's study page. If your building is designated, ask the City's heritage staff what its protection covers before anything is fixed to original walls.

Adding or removing most walls needs a City of Windsor building permit, so ask whether your layout counts.

What moves the quote

What affects the price of glass partitions

Partitions are quoted from the layout, like most commercial glass work:

  • Length and height of the glass run, and how many doors
  • Framed, frameless or half-wall construction
  • Tempered, laminated, or double-glazed for sound
  • Film, frosting or etched patterns
  • Floors and ceilings that are out of level
  • Evening or weekend work in an occupied office

A floor plan with rough measurements, or photos from each corner, lets the pro quote the layout.
